About Shawn M McGargill
My name is Shawn McGargill, MD, and I am a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician and a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. I earned my medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Following medical school, I completed an internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital – Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. I also completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a fellowship in interventional spine care at the University of Kansas in Missouri.
Prior to joining UF Health, I worked as a physician at UnityPoint Health in Des Moines, Iowa, providing inpatient and spasticity management for pediatric and adult patients. I also worked at Lakeview Specialty Hospital in Waterford, Wisconsin, during my training, taking care of patients with brain injury of all types in an inpatient setting. Prior to my medical career, I also worked as a research and development technician at Streck laboratories in Omaha, Nebraska, a microbiologist at Kind and Knox Gelatin, and an assistant manager at a large grocery chain.
My clinical interests focus on spine care and wellness to promote functional improvement, whether through therapy, interventions or alternative options. I also have interest in Botox and spasticity management, which is where my career started.
As a physician, my goal is to provide patients with the most up-to-date options for treatment and tailor a program to improve their spine care. Sometimes this includes more than just an injection. Wellness is treating the mind, body and soul to promote healing. This is the next step to trying to improve chronic symptoms and requires both clinician and patient cooperation.
During my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, learning about different ways to improve health, visiting Disney World and the beach, working in my yard and having a nice cup of coffee.
